SPIRITUAL TEACHER

Friday, 23rd Week in Ordinary Time

“Can a blind person guide a blind person?”

Fr. Robert Barron proposes a question we should ask: “Is the person to whom you have entrusted your soul and spiritual wellbeing a visionary, one who knows where to lead you?” “Or is your spiritual teacher blind, as lost as you are?” There are a lot of people who give themselves to blind guides: guides who unabashedly talk of their strong faith in God…guides who claim to get messages directly from God…guides who can quote the Bible for every situation and problem…guides who offer us a better life by preaching the gospel of prosperity.

If you are looking for a guide or teacher in your spiritual life, look for someone in whom Christ is living…look for someone who walks in the light of Jesus…look for someone who is subdued by the gospel values. Otherwise you will not be where you want to be, because your guide is not where you want to be.

May isa pang katangian o quality ang isang mabuting spiritual teacher: A good spiritual teacher acknowledges his or her own need for a savior. The one who can best lead and guide you is someone whom the Lord Jesus has saved. Or to use the words of and the image in today’s gospel passage: The one who can best lead and guide you is someone who has seen “the wooden beam” in his or her eye. Ibig sabihin, isang tao na nakikilala at naikukumpisal ang kanyang pagiging makasalanan at di-karapat-dapat.

Indeed, the person who can best lead and guide you is the one whose sins have been acknowledged and forgiven. The one who can teach you about God’s mercy and forgiveness is the one who has experienced it himself or herself due to confessing his or her sins and being forgiven by God. The one who can lead you to healing and reconciliation is the one who has experienced it himself or herself due to being healed of his or her woundedness and being restored and reconciled with God. The one who can guide you back to the right path is the one who has acknowledged his or her being lost and being found again by God. Spiritual teachers who have surrendered to Christ and have found salvation in him are the only ones who can help you and guide you in your spiritual journey. Look for that kind of spiritual teacher.
